Harvey Brindell and the Tablerockers Bring the Blues to Mock Crest Tavern

Playing the blues isn’t just about hittin’ every note perfectly. The blues is a different kind of music—one that requires both your skill and your soul. Harvey Brindell and the Tablerockers can claim both when they pick up their instruments and take the stage at Mock Crest Tavern.

Harvey Brindell and the Tablerockers

Harvey Brindell tells stories from his own life and others when he picks up his guitar. Sometimes they are rollickin’ fun and sometimes they pack an emotional punch, but they always come straight from his soul. With a career spanning over thirty years and stretching across the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, and now the Pacific Northwest, Brindell can pick and choose the regional sound he wants to accompany his storytelling to bring even more authenticity to his music.

Mock - Harvey Brindell

Brindell’s bandmates, the Tablerockers, add their own stylized storytelling skills to the music. With Ray Beltran on harmonica and vocals, Richard Wilkins on bass and vocals, and Jon Barber on drums, they have taken their place in Portland’s live music scene. In recent years they have received awards from the Cascade Blues Association and have backedblues legends across the United States.

With his signature Chicago “bluesman” style—a fedora and sharp suit—Harvey Brindell not only performs the blues, he lives the blues. Because of this, Brindell’s shows offer an authenticity that is impossible to duplicate.

Join your friends at Mock Crest Tavern on Saturday, April 13th at 9pm to experience true Chicago blues with Harvey Brindell and the Tablerockers.

Getting to Know Mock Crest Tavern

At Mock Crest Tavern we are known for serving “NoPo’s best blues, burgers, and brews.” We’ve been a landmark in the community for over 70 years and we wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. It’s “where friends meet and great memories are always on tap! “

The Building

Our unique cigar-shaped building on Lombard Street has been through several transformations through the decades. Initially a home to a meat market, it still sports the stone and glass front from its original design but today it glows under our easily recognized neon sign every night.

Inside, you will still find the tell-tale signs of the pharmacy that once inhabited the building. The long bar with stools should tip you off to its sugary past as a soda fountain. But, as time marched on so did the purpose our Mock Crest building.

Historic Buildings of North Portland

Our First Mural

Our building has always celebrated its relationships with our North Portland neighbors, and we’ve shown our love for boldly on the side of our building with murals that reflect all the wonderful things we enjoy in our part of the city. The first mural featured a rose bouquet, St. John’s Bridge, wine, baseball, and, of course, music!

Round Two

Our next mural zeroed in on Mock’s special place in the community as a place to find great live music. It’s painted in a modern, minimalist style that features the St. John’s Bridge and our own version of the “Portland Bluesman.” It announced to all who passed by that we are a haven of good music and exciting nights spent with friends.

The Latest Version

Today, you’ll find our most recent mural, which pays homage to our patrons, on the east side of our building. Created just last summer, this version is a snapshot of our bar scene and the people that bring it to life (as represented in animal characters as well as people). Painted by local artist and avid bar patron Edmond Booth, it combines the spirit of our tavern with a nod to the events of a big year in music and popular culture.

Cruise up Lombard Street the next time you are in North Portland and stop by a neighborhood mainstay, Mock Crest Tavern!

Mock - Castletown.jpg

Castletown on Thursday, February 15

Start off the weekend with the swinging, soulful music of Castletown. Their musical passions emerge in intensely energetic arrangements that feature Katie Jane on the Irish fiddle. Original songs written by both Katie Jane and Robert Richter are enriched with the additional talents of Drew Anymouse on drums and percussion.

Castletown travels all over for concerts up and down the West Coast and we’re very lucky to have them as a Mock regular every third Thursday of the month.

Electric Brit

I started this weekend early, stopping in to hear the latest addition to the schedule, The Electric Brit. As the name implies, Steve “Griff” Griffiths is an Englishman who loves classic rock and has a long and impressive history in the music business as a sound engineer and sound crew for such bands as ELO, Blue Oyster Cult, the Scorpions and KISS. He has collected a wide array of skills and, even though he takes the stage solo, he is hear playing all the instruments on his recorded tracks that back up his live guitar riffs and time at the keyboard. Check him out at Electric Brit.

Big Bossa Quartet

Mock mainstay Big Bossa Quartet brings a mystical quality to our bar every fourth Friday of the month. Evan Shlaes leads the band with his vocals and on the vibraphone. Clark Salisbury backs him up on guitar, Dave Captien on bass and Fred Ingram on drums. They take the familiar hits, mix them up with a modern sound and fill our bar with classics, like “Easy Rider, along with Latin, blues, jazz, and pop standards in the classic cocktail lounge style that defined the social life of the 1950s and 60s. Mock - Big Yellow Taxi

Big Yellow Taxi

Big Yellow Taxi members, Ken Brewer, Margot Kelly and Steve Kelly have been a part of the Portland music scene for years, playing funky acoustical Americana in several local bands, including Return Flight, Deep Blue, Soul Revue and the Eric Larsen Band, among others. Now performing acoustic sets of all genres, they provide an intimate musical experience that is perfect for Mock’s cozy venue. They take the stage every month at Mock and I’m already planning on coming back around for a second ride in their Big Yellow Taxi.
