Beer aficionados from The Beerchaser blog recently featured Mock Crest Tavern in its yearly round-up, recognizing our bar as one of Portland’s most authentic “dive” bars!
In his blog post “The Beerchasers’ Best Portland Dive Bars,” blogger Don Williams names Mock Crest Tavern as one of the best places to have a beer in Portland. Stating that our bar “is definitely a classic and borders on being a neighborhood establishment rather than classified as a dive” due to our long history in North Portland’s Mock Crest neighborhood. He also credits our our rotating drafts and three nights a week live music schedule as significant features that make us more than a typical dive bar.
We couldn’t agree more with Williams (of course!). Our bar has all the features of a classic dive bar, yet goes beyond what you would expect. Our bar is stocked with Portland’s most popular beers, from standard domestic brews, to the Portland craft beers that captures the greatness of the Pacific Northwest in a bottle. (Want to see what’s being poured right now? Check out our online leader board to see what drafts are currently being featured on our rotating taps.)
But it’s not just the great beer that William sites in his post. He also gives us props for our delicious menu! His favorite is an appetizer—the fried pickles—but he also comments about the breakfast plates. Our chefs are magicians in the mini kitchen they oversee and many of our regulars come in for the breakfast menu and come back for lunch and dinner, too!
Of course, Williams didn’t overlook our long history of hosting the best live blues musicians playing in small bars. Our stage comes to life every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday with acts from across the globe and regularly feature local blues favorites that come to us through the Cascadia Blues Association. (Check out our calendar to see who’s playing this weekend!)
If you are looking for an upscale, yet classic dive bar experience come out to Mock Crest Tavern. Experts like Don Williams of The Beerchaser agree, we’re one of the classics that “has a huge personality.”

The blues came home to Mock Crest Tavern recently when legendary local musician Norman Sylvester stopped by to entertain us with a night of the best live blues in North Portland!
Oregon Music Hall of Fame inductee Norman Sylvester is known throughout the Pacific Northwest for his long history of paying tribute to the many great musicians that traveled across the country to perform on the Chitlin’ Circuit. Today, along with his renditions of classic blues tunes, this bluesman has his own set list to entertain our crowd at Mock.
Norman was backed up by Rob Shoemaker on bass, Frankie “The Funk Master” Redding on keyboards and Paul “The Groove Machine” Shoemaker on drums, and they got our crowd on their feet and dancing to their broad range of blues and dance floor music.
Norman “The Boogie Cat” Sylvester was born in Bonita, Louisiana in 1945 and his music continues to be inspired by his Southern Baptist roots and the Gospel Quartet his father, Mack Sylvester, toured with over the decades. The family settled in the Pacific Northwest when Norman was twelve and today he is a member of the Cascade Blues Association. An organization with members that regularly play on Mock’s “Carpet Stage.” Over the years, Norman, along with his band, has gained a stellar reputation nation-wide and has shared the stage with blues greats like BB King, Buddy Guy, James Cotton, Junior Wells, Otis Clay and Peter Frampton, to name just a few.
Mock Crest Tavern is honored to have Norman Sylvester and so many other great artists share their musical passion and talent with us. Check our calendar to find out who will be performing here next and join us for the best blues you’ll find in Portland!
Baby, it’s cold outside, but the music is hot inside Mock Crest Tavern!
It’s the holiday season and we want to celebrate the whole month long we’ve featured our favorite local artists and great new bands that have come to us from all across the United States. It’s been a great way to count down to the end of the year, but don’t despair—the month isn’t over yet!
Over the last few weeks the local groups you see regularly on our schedule have entertained us—Claes of the Blueprints & Friends, the Adequates, and Castletown, with Johnnie Ward making several appearances on Mock’s “Carpet Stage,” with friends from The Eagle Ridin’ Papas and Sharkskin Review, as well as his Open Mic and Jam series.
New bands have also kept us rockin’ this month! Alexa Wiley and the Wilderness started off this musical month, with Pretty Drunk and Under the Lake keeping the place jumpin’ week after week. Come back tonight for Big Bossa Quartet, Sam Densmore on the 29th, the 30th for the Malachi Graham Band, and Randy Morrison’s Party Bus on New Years Eve!
Check our calendar every month, then come back again and again for the fun times and great music that has made Mock Crest Tavern famous as North Portland’s Best Blues Bar for over sixty years!
For nearly seventy years Mock Crest Tavern’s reputation as one of the Rose City’s best intimate music venues has drawn great acts from around world, but it’s our relationship with the musicians of the Cascade Blues Association (CBA) that has helped us earn the reputation as Portland’s best bar to listen to the blues.
The CBA is a local non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of blues and roots music in the Pacific Northwest. Its members are recognized around the world as top musicians and often perform alongside other acclaimed acts at music concerts and festivals that draw thousands of fans.
I love my nights out at Mock listening to bands like Suburban Slim and Tracey Fordice and the 8 Balls, both winners of the association’s Muddy Award for their great performances. They play regularly at the bar and never disappoint with covers of their take on the classics mixed with their own tunes. And, each time they play you’ll find a bar full of their fans singing the blues right along with them.
If you want to hear great live music in North Portland just to head on down Lombard Street and look for the Mock Crest Tavern’s “Portland Bluesman” mural on the east side of our building. The joint will be rockin’ and you can bet you’ll soon be happily singing the blues with these great bands. Check our schedule to see who’s playing this week.
Mock Crest Tavern has garnered a well-earned reputation as a great blues venue among local and even regional musical artists, but did you know our reputation has moved beyond the borders of the Pacific Northwest to artists across the nation and even the globe?
Throughout the year Mock welcomes amazing artists from the Cascade Blues Association, a regional blues organization that includes award winning artists. Local favorites like Tracey Fordice and the 8 Balls, Sneakin’ Out, and Suburban Slim regularly take over Mock’s “Carpet Stage” to bring the crowd to their feet with great covers and their own original tunes, but along with those great bands there are many national and international musicians making regular appearances, too.
Last summer I stopped in to hear K. C. Harris, a young musician from the East Coast on his maiden tour down the Pacific Coast. With influences like Bob Dylan and Neil Young, his music combined their raw musical style and counter-culture views.
Jet Black Pearl, a one-woman cabaret show from Europe, took to the stage just last month to reinterpret rap, beat box and many other surprising musical genres. She took us on a wild ride through her magical, musical world with a raucous accordion, thrilling flute, toy piano, and backed by beat created on a loop-station with her own voice.
No matter what your musical tastes lean towards you’ll find a fresh and exciting place to hear new and established artists from around the world. Check out the Mock Crest Tavern calendar for the latest updates to our performance schedule, and then make a date to join us as we welcome musical talent to Mock’s Carpet Stage!
Every week Mock Crest Tavern features the greatest live blues music in the city. It’s the kind of music that fits our North Portland neighborhood, and our menu reflects that same love in our Mock Crest “Blues Trio” of sandwiches.
A true classic, the Blues Burger delivers the juicy goods with crisp bacon and Mock’s special house-made “Blues Sauce.” It’s a creamy, earthy burst of flavor that amps up a regular burger with a bleu vein cheese. Add a habanero to it to kick it up another notch.
Blues Bird Chicken Sandwich
This sandwich hits a blue note with a crisp chicken breast, bacon, lettuce, tomato and an encore of our special sauce. It’s a meat treat with a bit of sass that makes it a five napkin meal.
Pita Bacon Blues
If you love BLTs you’ll love Mock’s Pita Bacon Blues. Crisp bacon is the star of the stage, but that star really sings when we slather on a layer of Mock’s “Blues Sauce.” Fill up a pita with all this goodness and you’ll be singing the blues, too, only in a good way.
There’s a choice of sides to go with your blues basket; chips, fries or Mock Crest Tavern’s famous tots. You can add more bacon, soup, or a salad to the plate—a great way to add just a bit more blue cheese to your lineup.
Check out our menu, then come on into Mock Crest Tavern tonight and try out our Bluesy good sandwiches!
